Action for Animals Maine

By Irene Fowle

Fall, Fall, glorious fall.  These are precious warm, sunny days when the leaves are turning and glowing orange, yellow and red. We want them to last forever. It's also the season of change.  Many of our seasonal members and friends are heading south for the winter.  We’ll miss them all.

We'll also really miss buying coffee, muffins and pies Saturday mornings at the Barn from Faye, Giselle and friends to benefit Action for Animals Maine.  They're packing in their tent until next summer.  But, last Thursday Faye McNall told us all about “Action for Animals Maine" in twenty minutes or less.  This non-profit was started by Giselle Armstrong, who was at a veterinary office with her beloved dog when she overheard a conversation that inspired her.  A pet owner needed emergency care for his pet, but couldn't pay for it.  Giselle helped that person and then went home to do all the work to establish "Action for Animals Maine”, which helps owners of pets in Lincoln County pay for pet emergency care.  There are income guidelines, easily found on their website along with applications for assistance and a place to donate to this great organization.

This week we are welcoming Stephen Fine talking about melanoma, a skin cancer that when found early can be easily treated in an outpatient setting.  The American Cancer Society has predicted over 200,000 cases yearly, but with self detection has good outcomes. Stephen will talk about the latest research and the best self detection methods.

The Rotary Barn is still open from 8:30 to 11:00 AM on Saturdays until around mid December unless the snow flies.  We're still getting lots of wonderful treasures from our generous neighbors.  If you can't find it at the Rotary Barn, you don't need it.

The Rotary Convention is in Barcelona, Spain this coming year on June 26-30th.  The club will reimburse part of the cost for the convention for five members.  We have been offered the use of an apartment in the heart of Barcelona.  Rotary Conventions are a blast, super fun, super inspirational.  Don't miss it.

In the near future we're meeting ghosts and goblins at the Boothbay Railway Village Spooktacular on Saturday October 31st.  We need members to help set up, hand out candy and have fun at this community Halloween event.  Talk to Conxa, she's the organizer.

Interested in Rotary?  Join us any Thursday at 6 pm at our Clubhouse 66 Montgomery Rd BBH for dinner and a program.  You’ll be glad you did.
