WHY JOIN THE BOOTHBAY
HARBOR ROTARY CLUB
ROTARY: CREATING HOPE IN THE WORLD
By Vicki Haugen

When folks ask why I belong to Rotary I give my standard enthusiastic answer, “Because it’s a great club for friendship and giving back to the community and the world. It’s fun meetings on Thursday nights with a cocktail hour (alcoholic or non) and then a prepared meal we share together, followed by a usually brief meeting and fun and informative speakers.”

But this just touches the surface of Rotary. While fun, friendship, and giving service are our cornerstones, there is so much more in the full story. For example, Rotary's top goal is to eradicate polio in the world. Rotary is an international organization that works locally as well as  nationally and internationally.

Rotary members believe that we have a shared responsibility to take action in our world’s most persistent issues. Our more than 45,000 clubs work together to:
  • Promote peace
  • Fight disease
  • Provide clean water, sanitation, and hygiene
  • Save mothers and children
  • Support education
  • Grow local economies
  • Protect the environment
Our own members have traveled internationally to participate in these various philanthropies. Our local club supports:
  • The donation of funds received from the Rotary Barn Sales of items donated to us such as furniture, yard tools, collectables, and household dishes and cookware
  • Rebuilding together projects
  • Bikes for summer workers in town
  • Veteran appreciation activities
  • High school Interact Club bringing adults and our HS kids together for projects
But wherever we volunteer we have fun and feel grateful we can share our energies and resources with neighbors near and far. So, consider joining us. Come to a Thursday meeting at 6 pm and see for yourself!

ALMOST SPRING
by Irene Fowle

Hooray, it's March,  almost Spring.  The days are definitely getting longer.  Next Sunday, March 9th we “Spring” forward, setting our clocks an hour ahead making for seemingly even longer days.   Spring here we come!!

So, we'll try to meet this Thursday.   So far the weather prediction is just rain.  Sure hope it stays that way.  Will be wonderful to see you all.

We are welcoming Kevin Bowler and Linda Redman from the Boothbay Region Garden Club this Thursday.  I think you’ll be surprised to hear about many of the projects and programs of The Boothbay Region Garden Club including scholarships, camperships and maintaining town gardens.  One special project is the Blue Star Marker that honors men and women serving in our Armed Forces.  The BRGC makes a difference in our community.  Come hear why and how.

Rotary Barn clean out is now scheduled for Saturday March 15th at 9:00.  Of course, that was the day we were taking a field trip to Partners For World Health.  I will try to reschedule that.  Reschedule, reschedule…that's what this winter has meant.  Thank you all for your flexibility.

Our annual Teacher Appreciation Dinner is Friday March 21st.  Cathy Fisher and Nancy Adams are co-chairs of this fun night.  Let them know if you can help.

See you Thursday.
