Change Over Dinner

By Irene Fowle

Last Thursday was “Change Over” dinner, the annual meeting when we thanked our outgoing co-presidents.  Thank you Mike Thompson and Alden Wood for your leadership, time, energy and good humor.  And, Ta Da!!  We welcome the amazing Laurie Zimmerli to be our President for this year along with co-Vice Presidents Conxa Packard and Byron Cortez.  What a dynamic team.  It's sure is going to be a good year.   We're a quite diverse group of people working and having fun together hoping to make our world a kinder, more compassionate place with the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self”.  Thank you Laurie, Conxa and Byron for stepping into the leadership of the club.  It's a bit like herding cats, a lot of independent ideas and goals, but we get a lot done and make a difference.

Presidents Mike and Alden nominated two members for Rotarian of the Year, our co-treasurers Brian McGrath and Bill Prince.  Not only do they keep track of our two budgets (Club Expenditures budget and the Rotary Foundation Budget) but they both take ownership for several aspects of the daily running of the club.  Thank you Brian and Bill, well deserved indeed.

During the meeting, Alden and Mike also presented Jeff Long and Tom Marston with Paul Harris Fellow awards in appreciation for their donations to the Rotary International Foundation.  Congratulations to Jeff and Tom.  Your generosity enables Rotary International to distribute aid and assistance throughout the world to make it a better place for all of us.

We finished out the night with a game of Club Members trivia with the usual “How Many Ex Presidents in the room” to the more important “How Many members in the room have had joint replacements”.  Members worked together at their tables.  There was a lot of chatter and laughing and the grand prize was that we got to know one another a bit better.

During our meeting, we welcomed Eric Bertelsen as our newest club member.  Erik has been an area resident for many years and has been a weekly visitor to the Big Gray Barn.  He has been an active and welcome volunteer.  We are so glad to have Erik on our team.

The Big, Gray Rotary Barn is open every Saturday from 8:30 to 11:00.  Not only is there furniture, boats, collectibles and household goods, but we now have a Chrysler Sebring Convertible for sale.  Just in time for all the sunny days coming up.   There's also coffee and muffins for sale most Saturdays now.  The “Action for Animals” group and a Girl Scout troop from Waldoboro have set up a tent by the Barn, in the rain ☔ ☔, selling coffee and pastries to our shoppers.  It has increased the Saturday morning mayhem and the fun too.

We need donations for the Barn, especially household goods.  So, since there's no meeting this week, you have time to clean out your attic or basement and find those extra lamps, plates, pots/pans, sofas, coffee tables and boats you no longer use.  Call or text Greg at 207-619-1417 for pick up or drop off plans. You can also reach Greg by email at rotarybarnpickup@gmail.com.
