Member Recognition

Seth Hedgcock, Boothbay's "Bike Man", is the guy who came up with the idea of collecting used bikes, refurbishing them, and lending them to our summer international workers, most of whom have no transportation to get around the Region. The project started in the summer of 2006 with eight bikes; by 2010 there were over 100 bikes distributed about the Region, all offering wheels to a previously overlooked group of people. In fall of 2009, the Club presented Seth with a well-deserved Paul Harris Fellowship for his tremendous work in recognizing a problem, figuring out a solution, and then getting it done. Seth is shown here with his wife Anne, to whome the Club earlier presented a Paul Harris for the work she does each year on the Rotary auction.
In 2008, the club honored Ken Honey for a lifetime of service above self as well as an incredible 47 years of perfect attendance. Here, Ken's granddaughter helps him cut his cake, while MC Chip Griffin looks on!
 
Peggy and IJ Pinkham share the moment after the club honors IJ with a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of all the work he has done for  ur area youth during his teaching career. IJ Pinkham, math teacher and BRHS boys' basketball coach, has led the team to the playoffs most every year, and frequently brought home the league's Sportsmanship Award as well.
 
The club honored Mike Thompson with Rotary's prestigious "Four Avenues of Service" award in 2007, recognizing Mike's impressive contributions to the Club, the community, our international neighbors, and also his vocation. This award is given only rarely, to very special individual Rotarians. The only other recipient in our Club to receive this award is Chip Griffin, who received it in 2006. Here, Chip (left) congratulates Mike on his award.
 
Long-time Boothbay Harbor Rotarian John Heyl celebrated his 100th birthday in April 2006, and the Club celebrated  in true style. John spoke to the Club that night about the changes he has witnessed in a century of living -- including his memories of learning about the Titanic disaster as a current event.  Here, District Governor Bob Laux (left) presents the Centennial Man with a Paul Harris award, while club President Bill Bailey looks on.One year later, in 2007, we celebrated John's 101st birthday (right). And in 2009, at age 103, John gave the keynote speech to our high school graduates.
